Head of Department, Lighting – ALIZÉ, Cirque du Soleil

Cirque du Soleil is hiring for a number of positions for its first resident show in Europe. The newly created show will premiere in Berlin, Germany, at Theater am Potsdamer Platz, and is expected to open in November 2025. 
The Head of Department, Lighting works in collaboration with the Show Technical Director and the Resident Shows Division Lighting Manager. This position will oversee the crew when installing, maintaining and operating theater power and UPS systems, the network lighting and dimming system, computer consoles, as well as conventional, automated and projection systems and equipment in a safe and consistent manner. The ideal candidate for this position will have a team player mindset and will be flexible. Should be comfortable and able to think critically and have the ability to make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
 
The Lighting HOD duties include:
-  In collaboration with the Technical Director and Production Department Manager, manage the show’s Lighting and Special Effects department during performances, Artist training, rehearsals and maintenance; including the research, purchase, installation, testing, troubleshooting, integration and ongoing maintenance and inspections of all equipment and systems required for rehearsal, training and show applications as well as inter- or intra-departmental needs;
-  Complete various HR/administrative tasks for the department, such as, but not limited to, payroll, scheduling, onboarding, hiring, disciplinary actions, etc.;
-  Work with Technical Director and Production Department Manager on all budgets and forecasting of departmental needs, including inventory;
-  Ensure all departmental-related documentation is completed accurately and in a timely manner. Work with Department Manager to set the strategy and standards for proper documentation and train team on best practices;
-  Learn, program and run show tracks to ensure the safe and continued operation of the show, as needed;
-  Adhere to and actively promote all applicable German occupational safety and health regulations, including DGUV standards, the Arbeitsschutzgesetz (ArbSchG), and industry-specific guidelines, to ensure the safe operation of all technical and performance-related elements of the production; participate in all required health and safety classes and emergency rescue procedure training;
-  Contribute to a safe and positive working environment at all times by adhering to and following all Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group standards, values, policies and regulations pertaining to safety using equipment and established working methods;
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
-  At least five years of previous experience working in Lighting and/or Special Effects on a large-scale production or in a similar environment;
-  At least three years of previous leadership experience;
-  Strong knowledge and experience installing and maintaining large-scale theatrical lighting systems and equipment;

Lighting Designer/Stage Manager, (hourly) Virginia Commonwealth University, School of the Arts Department of Dance and Choreography

The Lighting Designer and Stage Manager will provide the technical direction, stage management, communication, and facilitation needed for the department to present a professionally produced, well-organized, safe, and artistically strong production series each year involving students as the core production crew.

Lighting Design:

  • Design lighting for VCU Dance student and faculty productions
  • Serve as contact for all guest companies or productions presented by VCU Dance
  • Work with visiting production designers and technical staff to effectively execute design and production elements
  • Serve as liaison between guest dance companies, department Chair, Technical Director, and staff when preparing for visiting productions presented by VCU Dance

Stage Management:

  • Create a breakdown of the technical/production schedule in consultation with the Department Chair, Technical Director, and Faculty Concert Director
  • Plan and create crew schedules, timetables, and crew lists
  • Conduct sign-up days for student crews
  • Provide direction and supervision to students in relation to crew calls and crew work
  • Attend Friday Workshop Meetings on a regular basis to make announcements and organize crews for upcoming productions
  • Serve as logistical and technical support for off-site departmental performances
  • Provide leadership and mentorship in the areas of lighting design and technical theater

Qualifications:

  • Appropriate professional experience in technical theater and lighting design
  • BFA or BA in a relevant field or the equivalent combination of education, professional training, and experience
  • Knowledge of all procedures connected with the technical direction of dance and theatrical productions
  • Demonstrated ability to design lights for dance, and knowledge of dance as an art form
  • Interest and experience in working with students, running student crews, and training student crews
  • Stage management skills

Salary Range: $21-$24/hour

Technical Director, RWS Global (New York, NY)

Reporting to the Director, Technical &AV, the Technical Director will bring a well-rounded expertise across various technical domains, including AV systems, automation, rigging, scenic integration, and programming. The Technical Director will play a pivotal role in overseeing the successful delivery of diverse and innovative projects, from concept through to execution, ensuring that all technical elements align seamlessly with creative objectives and safety standards.

Role & Responsibilities 

  • Technical Project Leadership: Lead the technical advance, fabrication, installation, and documentation for all assigned projects, ensuring quality and safety at every stage.
  • Task Delegation: Assign tasks and oversee the work of onsite foremen, technicians, assistants, and other team members to ensure efficient execution of the project plan.
  • Collaboration with Design & Stakeholders: Work closely with internal design teams and key stakeholders at RWS to align technical execution with creative goals and project requirements.
  • Meeting Leadership & Participation: Actively participate in and lead meetings as needed, both internally and with clients, to ensure clear communication and alignment on project objectives and deliverables.
  • Safety Compliance: Maintain oversight of safety practices on-site and in the office, ensuring adherence to OSHA standards and other relevant regulations.

Starting Salary: $65,000-$70,000
