Live Design: What is your most recent project?
Andrew Strain: My most recent project has been launching Base-Guard in the United States — an advanced security fogging system designed to protect vehicles, retail spaces, and warehouses by instantly filling areas with dense fog to deter theft and vandalism. I led the full U.S. rollout, from product adaptation and compliance to branding, marketing, and installer training. The launch brought European-engineered security technology to the American market for the first time under the Hazebase America umbrella, establishing a new standard in fast-response property protection.
Live Design: What are the challenges facing the haze/fog industry today?
AS: The primary challenge revolves around understanding and accessing the necessary safety information for both machines and fluids. Additionally, accurate knowledge of fluid consumption, power requirements, and essential accessories like fans and hanging hardware is crucial for efficient and safe operation.
LD: What are the Hazebase solutions to these issues?
AS: Hazebase addresses these challenges by incorporating QR codes directly on our machines. These codes provide instant, up-to-date access to Safety Data Sheets (SDS/MSDS) and comprehensive manuals. We also offer Zoom training classes for service and diagnostic support, ensuring our users are well-equipped.
LD: What's new in terms of products?
AS: Our latest innovations include the Fab and Cube, which are the first water-based hazers to achieve CO2-sized output without requiring actual CO2.
LD: What are you doing at LDI this year?
AS: At LDI, I’m teaching a course on fog, haze, and atmospheric effects — focusing on how to safely and effectively integrate these technologies into live entertainment, theme parks, and architectural environments. The session covers fluid chemistry, machine maintenance, air management, and creative design applications.
LD: What will people learn in your course at LDI?
AS: Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of Hazebase technology. The course focuses on practical knowledge, including how to service our machines and how to select the most appropriate Hazebase machine for specific needs.
LD: Who is the target audience for this course?
AS: My target audience includes lighting designers, technical directors, production managers, technicians, and venue operators who want to better understand the science behind atmospherics and how to achieve professional results while maintaining safety and efficiency.
LD: What is your biggest challenge to date?
AS: The biggest challenge of my career has been bridging the gap between creative design and real-world implementation— taking complex fog, haze, and lighting technologies from concept to reliable, field-ready systems. Launching new products like Base-Guard in the U.S. required navigating technical, regulatory, and logistical hurdles while educating a market unfamiliar with the technology. Balancing innovation, safety, and practical application has tested every part of my experience — but it’s also been the most rewarding part of building solutions that truly work in the field.
LD: What advice do you have for the next generation?
AS: My advice for people just getting into the industry is to get hands-on early, stay curious, move up, and get on new projects. Find how you are the solution. Be the one people call. Learn every part of the process — from design to setup to troubleshooting — because real experience is the best teacher. Be humble, ask questions, and build relationships; this industry runs on trust and collaboration as much as talent. And remember: creativity is powerful, but reliability is what keeps you working.
