Live Design: Can you describe yourself in less than 50 words?

Jillian Beggs: A former touring prop person, I am passionate about supporting the entertainment community’s well-being and advocating for mental health on both individual and systemic levels.

LD: Please give a brief overview of your training/education/career path

JB: I hold a BA in Theater Arts from UC Santa Cruz and a Master's in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University focused on whole person psychology. Additionally an IATSE member in good standing and a touring prop person of 13 years. Mental Health First Aid trained and experienced life coach.

LD: Please describe your most recent project

JB: My latest project has been work on the Behind the Scenes Career Transitions/Expansions offerings for the BTS Mental Health Initiative. Our aim is to help entertainment industry workers who may be considering a shift in work due to life events, industry changes, or other personal or professional factors consider their next moves along with practical steps on where to start. LD: What are you teaching at LDI and who is your target audience?

JB: I am speaking on Bystander Intervention at the Wellness Lounge (booth # 510) and it is for anyone! The talk will focus on Bystander Intervention and the safe steps to stand up either as a target or witness of bullying, harassment, and intimidation. We will focus on the workplace, but these steps are applicable to any aspect of life and can help everyone feel safer assisting in difficult situations. Additionally, I will be at the Wellness Lounge speaking on the BTS Mental Health Initiative offerings such as Mental Health First Aid Training, printable materials and more!

LD: What has been the biggest challenge of your career to date?

JB: The transition from full time live entertainment technician to mental health advocate. Re-learning how to establish a community, not moving around, working "regular" hours, financial changes, the changes to my family and so much more have been challenging and yet incredibly rewarding. I continue to explore the "new" me and how my hands on work in entertainment continues to influence my advocacy in mental health

LD: What is your advice for people just getting into the industry?

JB: Find opportunities for self care- the work is hard at times and the hours often long, but there are ways to keep yourself mentally and physically (more) balanced. Oh, and don't wait until you knees hurt to start stretching before work!
