Cirque du Soleil ALIZÉ is the first resident show in Europe for the Montreal-based circus company. Co-produced with Live Nation, the show has been designed around the revamped Theater am Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, the largest theatre in the capital and formerly home to large-scale musicals but now adapted for the needs of the new show. And this show is the first of its kind, even for Cirque du Soleil, which is renowned for taking audiences on impossible journeys. As if death-defying acts of physical tricks were not enough, this time, Cirque is incorporating "mental" tricks with what it terms "acromagic," acrobatics and magic. To create an environment where magic can happen, the technology must be completely invisible, never letting the audience see how something is accomplished. For lighting designers, the trick here is to allow the audience to see the grace and beauty of the performers accomplishing legitimate physical feats, without letting it see the sleight of hand that goes into the magic. The lighting must help keep audiences in the dark.
The lighting co-designers are Martin Labrecque and Nicolas Descoteaux. Both have an extensive history of working with Cirque, in addition, Labrecque has been awarded four Masques Awards for other projects lighting dance and theatre. Descoteaux was awarded the Gascon-Roux award from Théâtre du Nouveau Monde for his work lighting Courville by Robert Lepage. He has also previously worked with Cirque du Soleil, in addition to other circus troupes.
In Cirque du Soleil ALIZÉ, as in other shows, the lighting becomes it's own dazzling character. In one instance, the simple use of "kinetic lighting" creates the look of an indoor drone show, believable because Cirque was one of the first entities to incorporate drones into theatre. And in practical terms, where so much action takes onstage, above the stage, above the audience, and around the theatre, the lighting acts as a guide for audiences.
