Weekly Wound Up: 6/14/24

It's awards season and a lot of theatrical designers have been featured in the news!

In addition to Live Design's coverage of the Broadway 2024 season, various articles have been popping up in print and online.

On June 12, 2024, The New York Times published a story titled All in the Details: Tony-Nominated Set Designers on Getting It Right in which Erik Piepenburg notes: "For this year’s nominees, some of their most rewarding — and realistic — work was in the smaller details," as he examines the set designs by David Zinn for Stereophonic and Jaja’s African Hair Braiding; Derek McLane for Purlie Victorious, and the design collective dots (Santiago Orjuela-Laverde, Andrew Moerdyk ,and Kimie Nishikawa) for Appropriate and  An Enemy of the People.

Adam Feldman in Time Out present a Broadway Q&A: Here Lies Love Set Designer David Korins, in which they chat about Korin's work on Hamilton, Beetlejuice, Here Lies Love —for which he was nominated for a 2024 Tony — and the current revival of The Who's Tommy. A year ago's New York Magazine's Vulture published Out With the Velvet Seats, in With the Dance Floor in which Korins talks about transforming a Broadway theatre into a disco for Here Lies Love.

This past April, Architectural Digest published the article, In Broadway’s The Great Gatsby, the Roaring ’20s Soar in Spectacular Fashion, in which Michael Giola explores the work of scenic and projection designer Paul Tate dePoo III, who brings the jazz age onto the stage, with more than 50 set changes at the Broadway Theatre,

In April 2024, The New York Times also published a slide show with text by Dan Pipenbring and photo and video by David Chow to tell the story of How A Broadway Theatre Was Remade Into A Queer Cabaret by designer Tom Scutt for Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club this season...

It's great to see all these designers in the news, and congraulations to all the nominees and winners in all of the design categories on and off Broadway this season.
