As touchless access control options for events continue to pick up steam, Amazon One has announced that its palm-scanning technology is now available on AXS’s mobile ticketing pedestals at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado.
Event tech companies have been investing heavily in contactless tech, especially as a result of the pandemic, giving fans the ability to scan into an event with wristbands, their smartphones, and now, their palms. Facial recognition technology has also been deployed for certain B2B events but is not yet widespread in the live event sector.
One of the reasons for this is customers’ apprehension at the idea of software recognizing their face and any data privacy implications that this may have. While attendees may be more willing to opt into palm recognition, the fact that it’s run by Amazon — although the company states that the service is “designed to be highly secure” — may make some similarly hesitant to turn over their palm signature to the tech giant.
Amazon One’s partnership with AXS marks its expansion into live entertainment venues, and it expects the tech “to be added to more AXS ticketed venues in the future.” It will likely start showing up at other venues in the near future as well.
Amazon One’s contactless technology has already been deployed at checkout counters at Whole Foods Market stores and other Amazon retail locations around the country, while Amazon Just Walk Out tech has been implemented at several event venues to enable easy checkouts.
“We are proud to work with Amazon to continue shaping the future of ticketing through cutting-edge innovation,” said Bryan Perez, CEO of AXS, in a statement. “We are also excited to bring Amazon One to our clients and the industry at a time when there is a need for fast, convenient, and contactless ticketing solutions.”
Fans can opt into the service at Red Rocks using either one palm or both, and can enroll at dedicated stations at the venue entrance and inside the venue.
